Syracuse City Schools Invitational (Oct 6, 2001): LeMoyne College was the host site for the Syracuse Cities Invitational ... 13 varsity teams competed on the 3.05 mile course ... the weather was rainy & breezy (temperatures 50 deg).  [I have posted preliminary Results] ... [Photos]

Boys Varsity ... Section 4 power Ithaca beat CNS & Tully by a score of 41-67-70 ... Ithaca runners finished 3rd, 4th and 5th which gave them a big advantage over the Section 3 teams. The individual winner was Tully's Lopez Lomong (16:08.3) ... Lopez has won every race he's been in since finishing 3rd at the early season ESM Invitational ... in this race, Lopez was in command after a mile and half and maintained a comfortable lead all the way to the finish ... Byran Buchanan (CNS, 16:19.4) ran another excellent race to out-finish three Ithaca runners. Tully's Sean Rienhardt (16:42.0) finished 6th with another good effort.

Girls Varsity ... A very good CNS girl's team outscored Ithaca and Tully (30-34-60) ... CNS earned the victory by placing four runners in the top six spots (Taryn Menard, 2nd, 19:33; Marie Parks, 4th, 19:38; Laura Ewald, 5th, 19:46; and Caitlin Wlodarski, 6th, 19:58).  Ithaca's Robyn Ellerbrook was the individual race winner (19:27) ... Tully's Jessica Portmess finished 7th (20:17) with a good effort.

Baldwinsville Invitational (Oct 6, 2001): The Baldwinsville Invitational was run on Baldwinsville's 3.0 mile course ... six varsity races were contested (Boys & Girls A, B & C/D) ... [Complete Results will be posted on the Coach Foster's Baldwinsville Web-Site] ... [Photos

Girls Varsity A ... This was a very interesting race ... some top Section 3 teams (Skaneateles, Beaver River & FM) challenged powerful Saratoga (the top girl's team in the nation) ... not surprisingly, Saratoga won convincingly by placing 7 runners in the top 10 places (21 points), with Nicole Blood the individual winner and fastest girl's time of the day (16:50) ... Skaneateles finished 2nd (76), Beaver River 3rd (97) and FM 4th (107) ... all three Section 3 teams ran very well !!!

FM's Laurel Burdick took the lead early in the race, but was followed closely by Nicole Blood ... Blood took a short lead with a just over a mile to go, and finished strongly to best runner-up Burdick (16:56) by only 6 seconds ... Skaneateles's Lia Cross finished 6th (18:02) ... Beaver River's Lauren Moser was a fast-closing 7th-place finisher (18:05) with Julie Emery finishing 11th (18:29).

Girls Varsity B ... Newark barely out-pointed South Jefferson (59-60) with Phoenix (97) and Chittenango (141) 3rd and 4th ... Nichole Lister (S Jeff, 18:01) won comfortably over a very game Lacey Watkins (Newfane, 18:13) ... Ashley Hughes (Phoenix, 18:51) and Kaitlin Rees (Oneida, 19:05) finished 4th & 5th.

Girls Varsity C/D ... Groton put on a very impressive show in defeating Windsor, Sauquoit Valley and Jordan-Elbridge (23-91-110-133) ... it was impressive for two reasons: (1) the Groton team ran very well and (2) top runner Becky MacKenzie did not run due to a slight leg injury. Groton senior Erin Yaichuk took an early 20 meter lead in the race and simply extended the lead all the way to the finish in a very impressive performance (18:26.0) ... Groton captured 5 of the top 9 places with Lynne Vincent (2nd, 19:07), Katie O'Konsky (5th, 19:17), Annie Scogin (6th, 19:26) and Alida vanAlmelo (9th, 19:34) running excellent races.

Boys Varsity A ... Saratoga easily out-pointed FM and Auburn (24-62-118) ... FM's Dave Masse did not compete. Saratoga's Sean Curran ran the fastest boy's time of the day (15:20) ... FM's Jarrett Morgan was the top Section 3 finisher (7th, 16:04) with FM's Kevin Page (9th, 16:10) close behind.

Boys Varsity B ... Skaneateles out-scored Chittenango (91-103) in a match-up of Section 3 Class B powers.  Brad Ariola (APW, 16:05) was the individual race winner ... freshman Steve Corsello (Skan, 16:16) and sophomore Randon Trowbridge (South Jeff, 16:20) were 2nd & 3rd.

Boys Varsity C/D ... Jon French (Gouverneur, 15:33) won the race with the second fastest time of the day ... Dan Tickner (Bishop Ludden, 15:44), Ben Hebdon (Groton, 15:45) and Nate Lockett (Moravia, 15:46) ran very good races to finish 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively.

Tully Invitational (Sept 29, 2001): This was the largest Tully Invitational ever held ... 60 teams and 2000 runners.  The weather was pleasant for an XC invitational ...partly sunny, light to moderate winds and 50-65 deg.  Six varsity races were contested on Tully's 5000 meter course (in previous years, the course was about 3.0 miles compared to the current 3.1 miles) ... races were seeded to intermix the classes ... I have posted complete results (thanks to excellent work of Pat Leone & Leone Timing ServicesA note about the speed of the new course ... I calculated that compared to last year's Tully Invitational, this year's course was about 50 to 55 seconds slower.

Girls Varsity #1 ... Westhill defeated Tully and Baldwinsville by a score of 39-69-81.  Kayleigh Wheeless (Westhill, 19:35.6) won the race handily and lead the from start to finish ... Kelly Owens (Bville) ran very well over the final mile to finish 2nd (19:59.2) with Jenny Ryans (Clinton, 20:10.6) and Kaitlin Rees (Oneida, 20:21.8) finishing 3rd and 4th.

Girls Varsity #2 ... A very good Liverpool team won the race over New Hartford and Whitesboro (36-83-101).  Tracey Brauksieck (Homer, 18:25.2) was the very impressive individual winner of the race ... she lead most of the race, and her winning time (18:25.2) was over a minute faster than any other girl runner for all three varsity races ... Tracey is easily one of the best runners in the State.  Lauren Noble (Little Falls, 20:05.6), Katie Luker (New Hartford, 20:21.5), Meghan Nolan (Liverpool, 20:21.9) and Colleen Rice (Liverpool, 20:25.0) ran well in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th positions.

Girls Varsity #3 ... CNS edged Beaver River in the closest girl's race of the day by a score of 38-40.  Lauren Moser (Beaver River) led most of the race and finished with a very good winning time of 19:32.9 ... team-mate Julie Emery was 2nd (19:42.4 ... Note: Julie Emery & Adrienne Gagnier (5th) had results mistakenly switched) ... Marie Parks (CNS, 19:57.0) and Laura Ewald (CNS, 20:07.6) were 3rd and 4th with Adrienne Gagnier (Beaver, 20:149) and Taryn Menard (CNS, 20:28.5) 4th and 5th.

Boys Varsity #1 ... Tully edged CNS in the closet boy's race of the day by a score of 49-51. Tully's Lopez Lomong ran the fastest race of the day (16:40.8) ... Dan Tickner (Bishop Ludden, 16:50.3) and Bryan Buchanan (CNS, 16:55.7) ran very good races to be 2nd and 3rd.  Lomong was 20 meters ahead at the mile mark ... he maintained his margin all the way to the finish ... Tickner & Buchanan ran very gamely in trying to catch the winner.

Boys Varsity #2 ... A strong Sauquoit Valley team beat Beaver River and Baldwinsville (34-94-121). Brad Ariola (APW, 17:06.0) was the impressive individual winner ... Alan Merrick (17:11.5), John Nicotera (17:13.4) and Kevin Horvath (17:13.9) of Sauquoit Valley were closely bunched in 2nd, 3rd and 4th with very good efforts.

Boys Varsity #3 ... Holland Patent outscored Somers (from Section 1) and Corcoran (80-124-133) to win the final varsity division.  Nate Lockett (Moravia, 16:50.2) and Kane Seamon (Richfield Springs, 16:57.7) traded leads during the race with Lockett taking command in the final 600 meters ... an excellent effort by both runners ... Jason Croniser (Adirondack, 17:06.7) and Andrew Lawson (Holland Patent, 17:15.8) were 3rd and 4th.

Auburn Invitational (Sept 22, 2001): As usual, the Auburn Invitational was contested on the East Middle School course (3.05) adjacent to Cayuga Community College ... the weather was partly sunny and pleasant (temperatures 65-75 deg).  Six varsity races were run (boys & girls Class A, B & C/D) ... I have posted selected results.

Boys Varsity A ... Although classified as a Class D school, Tully competed in the Class A race ... Coach Paccia wanted the team to gain experience against larger and stronger schools in hopes of improving their abilities for races later in the season ... Tully (82 points) responded well by finishing a close 3rd to Ithaca (72) and Corning (77) ... Tully's Lopez Lomong continues to impress as he won the race handily in an eased-up 15:56.0 ... other Tully runners ran well (Sean Rienhardt (17:00), Lief Brunet (17:06), Tom Caracci (17:17), Toby Dornton (17:36) Bennett Hillenbrand, and Jesse Burke) ... Jeff Dugan (West Genesee, 8th, 16:40) ran well and was the 2nd Section 3 finisher behind Lomong.

Girls Varsity A ... Skaneateles (34 points) moved up and easily won the "A" over Ithaca (67) and Corning (80) ... Lia Cross (Skan, 19:04.2) was the individual winner ... through the first part of the race, Lia traded leads with Kate Kohout (Clarence) ... Lia was comfortably in the lead in the last half of the race ... Julie Lynch (Skan, 19:32.3) finished strongly to capture 4th place.

Boys Varsity C/D ... John French (Gouverneur), who won last week's South Jefferson Invitational race, was an impressive winner in 15:51 ... this was the fastest time of the day.  Dan Tickner (Bishop Ludden, 16:10.6) ran well to be 2nd ... Dan also ran very well at the ESM Invite.

Girls Varsity C/D ... This race matched Groton & Tully (two of the best Class D schools in the State) ... unfortunately, neither team was able to have a complete roster compete.  Groton was particularly short-handed as four top runners were absent (Erin Yaichuk, Brandey Hurchla, Katie O'Konsky, Lynne Vincent) due to ACT tests or other problems ... Tully's top runner, Heather Roberts, started the race with a nasty sinus infection and was unable to finish. Tully won the race 71 to 84, but Groton ran very impressively and demonstrated some excellent team depth. Lacey Watkins (Newfane, which is near Buffalo) was the individual winner and ran the fastest girl's time of the day (18:49.1) ... Melissa Usack (Lansing) and Becky MacKenzie (Groton) ran excellent races and finished 2nd (18:56.7) and 3rd (18:57.5) respectively ... Annie Scogin (Groton, 19:59.8) and Emily Schmidt (Tully, 20:09.9) also ran well in finishing 4th and 5th.

South Jefferson Invitational (Sept 15, 2001): The South Jefferson Invite was held at the South Jefferson high school course (3.05 miles) under relatively cool, sunny and pleasant conditions (temperatures of 50s rising  to mid 60 deg). The South Jeff course is a very good mixture of flat and hilly terrain ... it is well suited as a possible sectional site in future years. The well-run meet included only four races (boys & girls varsity and boys & girls JV) ... complete results are posted.

In the Girls Varsity race, Nicole Lister (South Jeff) opened a 30 meter lead over Lauren Moser (Beaver Riv), Adrienne Gagnier (Beaver Riv) and Julie Emery (Beaver Riv) only 800 meters into the race ... at the mid-point, Lister maintained a 30 meter lead over Moser who was now nearly 100 meters ahead of Gagnier, Emery, and Hanah Failing (Whitesboro) ... Moser took control of the race after 3500 meters and finished strongly and impressively to win in 19:08 ... Emery was 2nd (19:51) with Failing and Gagnier nearly dead-heating in 19:54 ... Lister was 5th in 19:57. Beaver River's Kendra Chamberlain (21:03), Kisa Ruiz (21:30) and Michelle Golden (21:42) also ran well ... in addition, Amanda Zehr won the JV race in 21:59 ... Beaver River has a very strong team!

The Boy's Varsity race was won impressively by John French (Gouverneur) in 16:43 ... he led the race from start to finish ... Brad Ariola (APW, 17:06), Matt Coryea (Watertown, 17:13) and Lucas Aeschlimann (Mt Markham, 17:18) ran very well to be 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.

Central Square Invitational (Sept 15, 2001): The Central Square Invite was held at the Central Square high school course (3.1 miles) ... I arrived too late to see the varsity races; however, I have posted results of the meet.

Cicero-North Syracuse won both girls & boys A/B races ... the Skaneateles girls won the C/D race despite the absence of several top runners (Lia Cross, Julie Lynch, Simone Bras, Cadie Cargile). Kelly Owens (Bville) won the girls A/B race (19:55.6) with Kerry Banazek (West Gen) 2nd (19:58.5) ... Ashley Hughes (Phoenix) ran an excellent time of 19:19.5 to finish 2nd in the girls C/D race. The entire field in the boys C/D race took a wrong turn and "cut" a section of the course ... according to several coaches at the meet, this lowered the final times of the lead runners by roughly 85-90 seconds (compared to the A/B race).

Chenango Valley Invitational (Sept 15, 2001): Both the Tully Girls Varsity & Boys Varsity won the Small School divisions of the Chenango Valley Invitational (as did the Tully Boys JV) ... Tully's Lopez Lomong was the individual winner in the boys varsity race (16:04.9) ... other Tully finishers were Sean Rienhardt (7th, 16:24.6), Lief Brunet (15th, 17:05.6), Tom Caracci (23rd, 17:30), Bennet Hillenbrand (37th, 18:13.8), and Jesse Burke (38rd, 18:14.2).

Lansing's Melissa Usack won the girl small school race (18:47.6) ... Tully finishers were Heather Roberts (5th, 19:33), Emily Schmidt (6th, 19:39), Annie Rienhardt (12th, 20:03), Jess Portmess  (19th, 20:25), Lauren Silvernail  (33rd, 21:23), Gwen Lennox (48th, 22:02), Tess Daly (50th, 22:05), Sandi Ellis (52nd, 22:08), Michelle Lopez (57th, 22:15), Grace Tucker (59th, 22:19) and Jonelle Smydra (109th, 25:08.3).

East-Syracuse Minoa Invitational (Sept 8, 2001): The ESM Invite was held at the Pine Grove Junior High course ( 5080 meters) under very warm-to-hot and sunny conditions (temperatures of upper 70s rising  to mid 80 deg). All classes (A, B, C and D) ran in the same races.  When available, complete ESM results will be posted.

Girls Varsity: this raced included some of the best runners in Section 3 in an early season match-up.  About 1K into the race, Nicole Lister (S Jeff) held a very slight lead over Tracey Brauksieck (Homer) with Laurel Burdick (FM) about 20m behind in 3rd and some additional gaps back to Melissa Lister in 4th and Jessica Lister in 5th ... the placing was nearly the same at 3K ... with about 1K remaining, Brauksieck accelerated the lead and blistered the final 800m ... the final order of finish and approximate times were: (1) Tracey Brauksieck (Homer) 18:47, (2) Laurel Burdick (FM) 19:13, (3) Nicole Lister (S Jeff) 19:51, (4) Melissa Lister (S Jeff) 21:09, (5) Jessica Lister (S Jeff) 21:24, (6) Mackenzie Klump (FM) 21:31, (7) Heather Roberts (Tully) 21:40, (8) Brittany Crawford (FM) 21:47, (9) Jessica McAnaney (Tully) 21:59, (10) Amanda Lalley (Cent Sq) 22:04.

Boys Varsity: David Masse (FM) ran a very intelligent race under the hot conditions and won impressively.  About 1K into the race, Tully's new runner from the Sudan (Lopez Lomong) was running fast with Sean Rienhardt (Tully) about 20m behind and Dan Tickner (Bishop Ludden) another 20m behind ... at 3K, the fast early pace was beginning to tire Lomong, but he was still holding a 15m lead over Masse who was moving confidently into a contending position ... Masse took the lead at about 3.5K and was unchallenged to the finish ... Tickner finished well to be 2nd ... some finishing positions and approximate times were: (1) David Masse (FM) 16:47, (2) Dan Tickner (BL) 17:07, (3) Lopez Lomong (Tully) 17:30, (4) Andrew Zehr (Cana) 17:43, (5) John Evans (CBA), (6) Jason Croniser (Adirondack) 17:56, (7) Sean Rienhardt (Tully).

Girls JV: The Tully girls won the race taking four of the top five positions ... (1) Tess Daly (Tully) 24:10, (2) Sandi Ellis (Tully) 24:38, (3) Grace Tucker (Tully) 25:13, (4) Kerrie Crandall (Cent Sq) 25:45, (5) Michelle Lopez (Tully) 26:07 ... this was Tess Daly's first career race and she lead from start to finish!
