Pre-Season ... National BOYS Individual Profiles/Ranks - Cross Country 2019

Below are Performance Profiles for 41 top national high school male runners entering the 2019 cross country season ... I find it interesting to examine profiles of the top national boys and also compare them to the top NY boys (Profiles for the 2019 New York Boys) ... Performance data helps evaluation ... and knowing the performance level of the best national runners is always interesting ..... Opinions will differ on the ranking position of individual runners, but that's a good thing ... It's also a "necessary thing" for serious handicappers ... The order of the runners below is my current pre-season opinion .
 

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2019 XC season.  The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster).  Selected track data are also shown.

 

 

 #1 - Cole Sprout   12    Valor Christian HS   Colorado

 

 

 

 

 

 Cole Sprout is clearly one of the best runners in the nation ... He demonstrated Elite National ability during XC 2017 (speed ratings in the 190s and 21st at NXN Nationals) ... Track 2018 was sensational capped off by a fast 2-Mile at Brooks PR (8:49.46) ... Last year's XC season showed additional improvement and a 3rd-place finish at NXN Nationals (he is the top returning runner from NXN) ..... Track 2019 produced even better Elite PRs including 2-Mile (8:46.41), 3200m (8:40.73), Mile (4:04.17) and 800m (1:53.87) ... Cole's 3200m PR came at the Arcadia Invitational where Nico Young edged Cole by less than a second.

Cole Sprout gets my #1 ranking over Nico Young because this is cross country (and Cole beat Nico at the XC National Meet) ... and during Track, Cole traveled out-of-State for several major meets with outstanding results.

 #2 - Nico Young   12    Newbury Park HS   California

 

 Nico Young showed a huge XC improvement during his junior season (predicted somewhat by excellent Track performances in the preceding spring season) ... Nico raced exceptionally well at NXN Nationals finishing 4th (198 speed rating), and is the #2 returning runner from NXN (behind Cole Sprout.

Nico's Track performances are remarkable ... Four 3200m races sub-9:00 including the phenomenal race at Arcadia (8:40.00) ... Little separates Nico Young and Cole Sprout from being the top-rated harrier entering the 2019 XC season.

 #3 - Graydon Morris   12    Aledo HS   Texas

 

 Graydon Morris finished 3rd at Foot Locker Nationals last year and 2nd the year before ... He is again the top returning runner from Foot Locker ... That alone gets him ranked highly (proven ability to compete well at National level meets).

Graydon was very good during Track and set PRs at 5000m (14:27.95), 3200m (9:03.67) and 1600m (4:14.11) ... But his best Track performance was his 3rd-place finish at the Brooks PR 2-Mile (8:50.52) ... Graydon could become one of the few runners to qualify for Foot Locker all four years in high school.

Matt set a 3200m PR (8:47.97) at the Dublin Distance Festival in March ... a near equivalent time was performed at the Brooks PR 2-Mile (8:51.00) in June ... Matt set his 1600m PR (4:08.07) when winning the CIF State Meet.

Evan Holland has proven top-quality XC ability ... he won NXN Northwest and finished a very nice 16th at NXN Nationals ..... Evan's outstanding Track performances show continuing improvement ... Finished 2nd to Cole Sprout at the Brooks PR 2-Mile setting a PR (8:50.29) ... Ran a fast 1500m at the Portland Track Festival (3:46.59, roughly equivalent to a Mile time of 4:04.9) ... Won the Oregon State Champ 3000m (8:13.0, roughly equivalent to an 8:52.0 2-Mile) ... Evan Holland could be a real challenger for a top national spot.

 #6 - Easton Allred   12    Corner Canyon HS   Utah
Easton Allred finished 5th at NXN Nationals last year (and 22nd the year before), so he races very well at the Glendoveer course (he is the #3 returning runner from NXN) ... Easton transferred from Mountain Vista CO to Corner Canyon Utah ... He competed very little during the outdoor Track season due to having his tonsils removed and an IT-band issue ... A healthy Easton Allred is a contender for a top national spot, and a real bonus for the Corner Canyon team's chances at NXN.

Aug 8 Update ... Easton Allred has a stress fracture in his foot diagnosed shortly after the Nike Elite Distance Camp ... He could be out anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months.
