The 2012 London Olympics are approaching ...
After watching the US Olympic Trials on TV and seeing two former NY
runners qualify for London (Molly Huddle and Lopez Lomong),
I thought it might be interesting to go back and look at their high
school performances in cross country and track ... So I dug through my
archived databases and results and compiled the high school
performances of Molly Huddle, who is one of the best high
school distance runners in New York State history ... Molly's
High School Performances are listed below. First Time Watching Molly Huddle ... Tully attended an early season outdoor track meet at the Lansing Invitational on April 21, 2001 ... Just after arriving at the track, the Lansing coach came up to me and said, "Wait 'til you see the girl from Elmira Notre Dame - She's the Real Deal" ... and that turned out to be very accurate ... Molly was a junior at Elmira Notre Dame at that time. Molly Huddle graduated from Elmira Notre Dame High School (Elmira, NY) in 2002 ... She did not run cross country until her senior year ... As a junior, Molly lettered in soccer, basketball and outdoor track. Cross Country ... Elmira Notre Dame did not have cross country team, so Molly played soccer in the fall ... But after a very successful track season as a junior (State champion at both 1500 and 3000 meters & 3rd at Nationals in both the 1-Mile and 2-Mile), she wanted to run cross country to improve her track times ... The school agreed to let Molly's father coach her, so she ran cross country as a one-person team in the fall of 2001. Molly was undefeated in cross country during regular season and won league, sectional (Section 4) and State titles (Class D and Federations) ... She set 12 course records including McQuaid (17:04.4 beating Footlocker Finalist Laurel Burdick of Fayetteville-Manlius 17:29) ... she had the 2nd fastest time ever at Bowdoin Park (as of 2001) in winning Federations. She qualified easily for Footlocker Finals by finishing second at Footlocker Northeast (run at Van Cortlandt Park) ... Footlocker Finals 2001 was held at a golf course in Orlando, FL ... Molly finished 4th with a very good effort on a very warm day (Footlocker results listed below) ... The race was won by Amber Trotter who recorded the highest speed rating I have ever seen for a high school girl (180.3).

Meadows Golf Course (where this year's State Meet will be run) ... It was actually a pretty decent day
weather-wise for Buffalo in November |

except that it was very windy during some of the races ... I
remember Molly cresting a hill with a huge lead during the Class D
race, and big gust of wind nearly blew her over! | Current Biography .....
Molly Huddle currently lives and trains in Providence, RI ...
she is sponsored by Saucony ... Molly attended the University of
Notre Dame and had a very successful college career ... According to
one Internet bio, Molly is a huge Oprah Winfrey fan, she paints her
fingernails a different color the night before each race, and is
married to Canadian middle-distance runner and former Notre Dame
teammate Kurt Benniger. Molly Huddle is the current American record-holder of the 5000 Meters (14:44.76) ... This is the race she will run at the 2012 London Olympics (prelim on August 7th, final on Aug 10th). while running at Elmira Notre Dame High School.
NY State High School Records Set by Molly
Huddle: As a senior, Molly was going to run indoor track as part of the Elmira Notre Dame team (she played basketball in her junior year) ... Unfortunately, Molly started the winter sport season on the basketball team and was not allowed to change sports because the league (IAC) had a rule prohibiting students from competing in two sports during the same season ... She quit the basketball and ran as an independent runner during indoor track. During the indoor season, Molly set the 1500 meter record that still stands (4:22.1) ... that 1500m was run in an All-Comers Meet at Cornell in a race that included both male and female runners ... The time is currently recognized as the overall State record ... At this year's Indoor State Meet, Mary Cain ran 4:24.25 which is recognized as the NYSPHSAA record ... I suspect Mary Cain may break Molly's record next winter.
