Scaling Speed Ratings
I can scale speed ratings for different distances by two methods ... The method used in the table above uses an adapted method I apply for most 4K distance races when I have supporting data (prior speed ratings of enough individual runners).
The formula applied for most girls' 4K races is:
SR = UR - (135 - UR) x 0.10
.... where:
.. SR = Scaled Rating
.. UR = Unscaled Rating
.. the 135 (can range from 120 to 145) is a Focal Point where the Unscaled
Ratings "fit" the known previous speed ratings of enough above average runners
(135 generally works well for 4K girls and 175 for 4K boys).
.. the 0.10 (can range from 0.05 to 0.30 or higher) is a variable multiplying
factor to best fit the known slower runners
For the 6K Ratings above, the formula applied is:
SR = UR + (150 - UR) x 0.10
.... where:
the Unscaled Rating (UR) derived from the 6K times uses a correction
(adjustment) factor +123 seconds (meaning 123 seconds was subtracted from the
actual 6K times of all runners to approximate a 5K time and yield tentative
speed ratings consistent for the above average girls).
The second scaling method converts the actual 6K race times to equivalent 5K times ... The conversion can use common on-line converters (such as https://tools.runnerspace.com/gprofile.php?do=title&title_id=801&mgroup_id=45577) ... or an approximated 5K time can be used depending on the speed of XC course ... This USATF race was contested on a relatively fast course ... So I might assume the top 8 finishers were under 17:00 on a fast 5K equivalent course, with Irene Riggs about 16:20 for an equivalent 5K (she did pass the 5K mark in the 6K race at 16:40.7) ... The assumption yields a conversion on 0.828, so I multiplied all 6K times by 0.828 to get 5K times, and I speed rated the 5K times as I normally do.
The table below shows the speed ratings by this method ... It uses correction (adjustment) of 87 seconds (added to 5K times) to derive the speed ratings which makes the 5K times similar to inherent speeds at Woodward Park CA and McAlpine Park & WakeMed NC ... The speed ratings below have slightly higher values for the slower runners ... I like the values above based on the race being run in January, but an average value from the two table might work OK.
