Below are Abbreviated Performance Profiles for 33 top national high school male runners entering the 2022 cross country season ... I find it interesting to examine profiles of the top national boys and also compare them to the top NY boys (Profiles for the 2022 New York Boys) ... Performance data helps evaluation ... and knowing the performance level of the best national runners is always interesting ..... Opinions will differ on the ranking position of individual runners, but that's a good thing ... It's also a "necessary thing" for serious handicappers ... The order of the runners below is my current pre-season watch-list.
 

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2022 XC season.  The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster).  Selected track data are also shown.

 

Note ... These profiles provide information for those viewers who are interested in these types of stats ... Speed ratings were one major factor in runner selection and ranking ... I started with my Highest National Speed Rating List from 2021 ... Track data was also considered with handicapping opinion ... Again - the order of the runners below is my current pre-season watch-list.

... Lex Young (and the Newbury Park guys) had a sensational XC season ... Lex had two speed ratings in the 200s and two in the mid-to-upper 190s which indicates a top elite runner in the nation ... Newbury Park returns three runners at this level ... Lex gets my #1 preseason rank due to his remarkable track performances ... For XC projection, Lex's incredible 5000m track performance of 13:43.95 (2nd best all-time to Galen Rupp) is key ... Lex's 3200m (8:35.72) and indoor 3000m (7:57.06) are also outstanding.

... Leo Young ended the 2021 XC season as the #2 ranked runner in the nation (Colin Sahlman was #1 and Lex Young was #3) ... Like Lex, Leo had two speed ratings in the 200s and two in the mid-to-upper 190s  ..... During track, Leo had some outstanding performances including the 1-Mile (4:00.77) and 3200m (8:39.57) ... Unfortunately, an injury side-lined Leo for the remaining portion of the track season after Arcadia.

... Tyrone Gorze won the Eastbay West Regional and then finished 6th at Eastbay Nationals (the #2 underclassman) ... his four final XC races had speed ratings in the 190s ..... In track, Tyrone has three 5000m track races between 14:00.34 and 14:12.32 which approximate to speed ratings of 198 to 202 ... plus other excellent track performances ...he could possibly challenge the Newbury Park guys ... But note that his 14:00.34 5K time came in the same race as Lex Young's 13:43.95 which included pros and perfect conditions, so the approximated speed ratings for that race are likely too high by several points.

Kole won the Indiana State Track Meet 1600m (4:04.82) and 3200m (8:59.05) in excellent times ..... Also of note - during the 2020 XC season (a Covid season), Kole Mathison beat all three of the top-rated Newbury Park runners above at the XC Town USA Meet of Champions contested at the LaVern Gibson course in Terre Haute, Indiana.

I expected Connor could be very good this coming XC season (he could definitely better this #10 ranking).

... Devan Kipyego is a runner to watch ... he had several speed ratings in the mid-180s ... But he demonstrated exceptional speed during track including  a fast Mile at Brooks PR (4:00.64) ... his best "distance" performance was a quick 3000m (8:20.52) ... Devan's XC performances will need to improve to lift him into the top elite XC runner group, but seems very possible.
