Note ... The scores are simply my pre-season "guess" of relative team abilities in a combined race ... I included 37 teams to show some depth.

In General ... Similar to other pre-seasons, I see uncertainty in the team scores posted above ... Pre-season projections are often made with limited knowledge (or no knowledge) of incoming impact runners such as transfers (from other sports or other schools) or significantly improved runners from the previous year ... It requires guessing.

Saranac Lake enters the 2020 XC season as the top-rated team in NY ... The main reason is this - Saranac Lake is the defending Class C Champion (they won by 61 points last year), they finished 5th at the New York NXR Regional race and they return all 7 runners ... Saranac Lake's returning speed ratings give them an edge over Fayetteville-Manlius and Liverpool.

However, Fayetteville-Manlius and Liverpool are larger Class A schools ...  (see Class A speed ratings below) ... and the larger schools have a bigger pool of runners to find "New Blood" ... Also, Fayetteville-Manlius and Liverpool typically add some top new runners to their scorers each year ... and that needs to be considered ... But for now, Saranac Lake is top-rated.

One or two new impact runners could make a big difference for a bunch of teams ... Should be interesting to watch the development throughout the XC season.

Class consideration is important in the pre-season because it impacts far more runners than projections intended for Federation Championships or the NXN-NY regional qualifier ... Fayetteville-Manlius won the New York State Class A race and NXN New York Regional race last year (just like the year before) ... Although FM graduated two of their top runners (just like the year before), they return a solid core of runners for this year's competition ... FM is the slight favorite to win the State Class A race this year, but Liverpool is very close and a serious challenger to win.

Liverpool returns 6 of their top 7 runners, including their top 4 from NXR New York ... Liverpool and Fayetteville-Manlius typically add some new good runners to their rosters each year ... So this could be a good rivalry this season.

A bunch of teams are in contention for the spots behind FM and Liverpool.

The pre-season rankings are based largely on the speed ratings of returning runners which are shown below ... Any team with one or more "new" good runners or noticeably improved runners can improve their ranking position by quite a bit (and perhaps, a lot).

Mount Academy is really a Class D team based on enrollment numbers, but as a private school, they were moved-up in class by Section 9 ... Mount Academy finished 3rd at States last year (Class B, 18 points behind winner Burnt Hills), and Mount Academy returns their top 3 scorers from States ... Mount Academy has a disadvantage compared to other Class B teams due to their smaller enrollment numbers.

Burnt Hills is the defending Class B Champion again (they won by only 5 points last year over Pittsford Mendon) ... Burnt Hills lost 3 of their top 5 runners from States to graduation ... Burnt Hills usually has decent team depth and typically develops new talent every year ... Burnt Hills is again a threat to win Class B.

Pearl River finished 7th at States last year, but return their top 5 runners from States.

East Aurora is typically one of the top teams in the mix for State consideration ... they finished 4th at States last year (and graduated some top runners), but they usually reload quite nicely.
