NXN Boys & Girls Team Projections for 2014 |
Purpose ... The purpose of these projections is to get a General Idea of team strength based on speed ratings ... The purpose is NOT to predict exactly where each and every runners will finish (that is impossible no matter how good the data) ... I want ONLY an overall idea of where teams MIGHT finish relative to each other. These projections could be considered
similar to the "Morning Line" of a horse race
... I'm trying to provide information to bettors Speed is only one factor used in handicapping races and speed can be inconsistent for some runners ... See the "Importance of Speed Ratings in Handicapping NXN Nationals" article for additional information. Three Team Scores are
posted below: See text files of data (worksheets
of various team speed ratings by race): Initial projections posted on December 2, 2014 .... Actual Results Posted Dec 6, 2014 .... |

Pre-Race Comments ... All ten years of NXN have demonstrated that most teams will NOT have their best race of the year at NXN ... Many runners will have speed ratings lower than the individual runner projections below (this is expected because national competition on a new course is a new type of experience for many runners ... add in traveling, time-changes, etc) ... Most runners perform best on familiar courses (typically local courses for them) ... The projected ratings are just a vehicle for projecting relative team scores. The overall morning-line projected team scores above are based (in part) on the individual ratings below ... There were instances where I needed to make a "best guess" concerning ratings for individual runners with inconsistent speed ratings to approximate an overall-combined rating ... and incorporate possible inconsistencies into final projected team scores. Many runners are not consistent from race-to-race
(runners have good races, bad races and average races) ... That's why
predicting a team score based of any one race MAY be misleading in terms
of actual team ability ... I prefer a series of races (whenever
possible) to identify runners with big variations in performance ...
Then I need to figure-out how to handle these variations in
predicting the next race (Handicapping can be both fun and
frustrating General Team Comments: The morning-line at most horse tracks considers three factors: (1) past performance history of each horse, (2) an opinion of what people are likely to bet, and (3) a handicapping opinion of the person making the morning-line. Entering NXN 2014, the two teams that appear to be at the top are Fayetteville-Manlius (NY) and American Fork (UT) ... and based on performance at NXN regional races, La Salle Academy (RI) can be included. Overall, this is a very good field of teams with some top talent ... Perhaps half the field has the talent to challenge for a podium position IF the team, as a whole, can perform ... As noted above, some of the teams are going to run "sub-par" creating an opportunity for other teams ... This "sub-par" factor applies equally to the girl's race. Guessing which teams will run sub-par at NXN is exactly that - It's a Guess ... and
predicting the exact
order of finish is a "crap-shoot" to a certain degree Remember ... Teams performing at
(or above) performance levels getting them to NXN Nationals typically jump up
significantly in projected finish-positions Individual Team Comments: Fayetteville-Manlius NY ... Fayetteville-Manlius
finished 4th at NXN last year (I projected them 3rd) ... Based on their
record-setting performance at Bowdoin Park last year, FM looked like a
winner going Portland Meadows ... but I have suspicions of teams that
have a season-best performance (noticeably the best) and then they must race
the following week (or two weeks) against top teams after long travel
distances (FM at NXN 2004 is another example) ..... Fayetteville-Manlius
won this year's NXN regional with an "average" performance for them
which I think sets them up for a good performance at Glendoveer Golf
Course ... and I think the new NXN course is good for the FM guys
... It could be close contest between Fayetteville-Manlius
and American Fork, but I'm giving the advantage to FM
based on multiple excellent performances throughout the season .... It
is scary picking both the FM guys and girls to win American Fork UT ... American Fork finished 7th at NXN last year and 2nd in 2012 ... American Fork has one of the best cross country programs in the nation ... They have been consistently good all season and could definitely win this race. La Salle Academy RI ... La Salle was hampered early in the season with an injury to one of their top runners (Jack Salisbury) who has shown very nice improvement since returning ... La Salle popped a huge season-best performance in winning NXN Northeast ... and if La Salle duplicates that performance at NXN, they could definitely win ... As noted above, La Salle has the best team score based on NXN regional speed ratings ... But as suggested in the Fayetteville-Manlius write-up above, it is difficult to duplicate PR-type performances the following week against top teams after long travel distances. St. Anthony's NY ... St. Anthony's has proven to be much better than I thought in the pre-season ... They have shown continual improvement throughout the season ... To be honest, I'm not sure what to expect from St. Anthony's at NXN, but I think they perform well ... and that puts them in a podium contending position. Davis UT ... Davis had a big season-best performance at NXN Southwest and gave American Fork a scare (only a 3 point team score margin) ... At NXN Southwest, Davis had not raced in a month since the Utah State Meet ... and they have an extra week to recover from their season-best performance ... Davis enters NXN 2014 as a major contender for a podium spot, and perhaps, the top spot. Liverpool NY ... New York could have three boys teams finish in the top 10 if all run well ... Liverpool finished 20th at NXN last year, but I suspect that one year of NXN experience will help Liverpool finish better this year ... Like the FM guys, I think the new Glendoveer course will help Liverpool. Sandburg IL ... Sandburg won NXN Midwest by 78 points with a team spread (1st-to-7th) of only 15 seconds!!! ... Sandburg is an excellent pack-running team that has a real shot at the podium. Christian Brothers NJ ... CBA-NJ finished 2nd at NXN last year, 4th in 2012 and won NXN in 2011 ... That says a lot ... Even though this year's CBA team has yet to reach those performance levels, they have shown contending ability and could challenge for a podium position with a top performance. North Central WA ... North Central finished 8th at NXN last year and 3rd in 2012 ... North Central always seems to be a contender at NXN ... They have the top projected runner in Tanner Anderson (starting the team score with a low score is nice advantage). Individual Race Comments: The table below lists the top runners at NXN 2014 by approximate speed ratings (either overall or selected speed rating) ... 37 of the 50 runners listed below qualified as individuals (not on a team competing at NXN). Tanner Anderson has run 200+ speed ratings on multiple occasions this season and is the favorite to win ... Tanner Anderson finished 3rd at NXN last year and is the top returning NXN runner ... Bryce Millar won the NXN-New York Regional and is the NY State Class A champion ... Olin Hacker has performed extremely well during the 2014 season, is the NXN Heartland champion and also qualified for Footlocker Nationals ... Adam Bernard won NXN Southeast handily ... Jesse Reiser won NXN Midwest and then qualified for Footlocker Nationals ... Will Lauer and Paul Roberts are definitely capable of challenging for a top position ... Benjamin Veatch is another Footlocker National qualifier. Others in the list below are potential
contenders ... Look how close this field sets-up (40 guys
between 193 and 190 ... that's only a 9 second difference
which means little in a 5K race) ...
Should be an interesting race

Pre-Race Comments ... History has a habit of repeating itself and top high school cross country teams have a habit of returning to NXN Nationals ... Six of the top 10 girls teams from NXN 2013 return to NXN 2014 (including the top four teams from 2013 - Wayzata, Fayetteville-Manlius, Davis and Carmel)... and perennial favorite Fayetteville-Manlius NY is the favorite again. This race could be very competitive at the top-end and a bunch of teams are in the hunt for a podium spot. Fayetteville-Manlius, Carmel and Great Oak are projected in the top three spots ... Carmel gets the nod for the 2nd-spot based on previous results at NXN ... Naperville North, Saratoga Springs, Palatine, Blacksburg and Wayzata all seem relatively even-up and ALL are serious podium contenders. Individual Team Comments: Fayetteville-Manlius NY ... Fayetteville-Manlius has won 7 of the last 8 NXN National Championships and are the favorite again after finishing 2nd last year ... This FM team has some similarities to last year's team because they are vulnerable, just like last year ... From a handicapping perspective, I can see FM winning by 50+ points or losing ... Computer simulations pick up that inconsistence nicely ... If FM performs similar to their sectional championship or McQuaid Invitational races, FM will lose NXN ... If FM performs similar to their NY State Meet, they will likely win by a significant margin ... And as noted above in team scores from NXN regionals (based on speed ratings), FM would win handily with that type of performance ... If two of their projected scorers have off-races (which could happen), FM becomes vulnerable. Carmel IN ... Carmel has raced very well at NXN ... Carmel was 4th last year, 3rd in 2012, 5th in 2011 and 7th in 2010 ... Carmel has a very strong pack and the team goes 7 runners deep ... The entire team ran Footlocker Midwest as a tune-up for NXN ... Definitely a contender. Great Oak CA ... Great Oak is very good and goes 7 runners deep ... Top runner Destiny Collins suffered an injury before the Mt. SAC Sweepstake race in October (tendonitis I believe), but Great Oak won despite Collins not scoring for the team ... Collins returned for Southern Section Finals and California States as Great Oak's top runner (but not quite at the performance level prior to the injury) ... To demonstrate the strength of Great Oak, had Destiny Collins not run at States, Great Oak still would have been the top California team ... Great Oak did not perform well in past NXN races at Portland Meadows, but maybe the new course at Glendoveer Golf Course will help. Naperville North IL and Palatine IL ... Both Illinois teams raced very well NXN Midwest and their State Meet ... They were only 10 and 19 points behind Carmel at NXN Midwest ... Serious challengers for a podium spot. Blacksburg VA ... Blacksburg ran very nicely in winning NXN Southeast ... Their State Meet win was not their best performance, but Blacksburg won the Great American Race of Champions by an impressive 49 points. Saratoga NY ... Saratoga has a young team again this season ... The starters at NXN include four freshmen and an 8th-grader (one senior, one junior) ... If Saratoga can duplicate their better performances of the season, they have a real shot at a podium position. Wayzata MN ... Wayzata is the defending NXN champion, and their top two runners from last year's winning team (Anna French and Annika Lerdall) return ... Wayzata finished a very good 7th at NXN 2012. Unionville PA ... Unionville popped a big season-best performance to win NXN Northeast impressively .. Duplicating that performance will result in a better finish than projected above. Individual Race Comments: This year's race is exceptionally deep and talented ... Fiona O'Keeffe is the top returning runner from NXN 2013 (she finished 4th behind Alexa Efraimson, Elise Cranny and Sarah Baxter) ... I believe Fiona O'Keeffe and Allie Ostrander should be considered co-favorites for this race ... both have run multiple speed ratings in the mid-to-upper 150s. Girls that have qualified for both NXN and Footlocker include Paige Hofstad, Stephanie Jenks, Audrey Belf, Sarah Kettel and Annie Frisbie. Paige Hofstad won NXN South ... Marissa Williams finished only 5 seconds behind Fiona O'Keeffe at California States ... Stephanie Jenks is an amazing tri-athlete, swimmer and runner ... Bella Burda has had an outstanding undefeated season in New York winning the NXN Regional, NY Federation and NY State Meet ... Ella Donaghu (the only high school runner who beat Alexa Efraimson in an XC race last year) won NXN Northwest and beat Allie Ostrander ... Jessica Lawson (second to Bella Burda in the NY races) should not be under-estimated in this type of race on this type of course ... Bethany and Megan Hasz ran one-two at NXN Heartland ... Katie Rainsberger was 6th at NXN last year, and I think she is faster than the 150 speed rating listed below ... Hard to believe the two Michigan girls (Audrey Belf and Sarah Kettel) are that far down the list below because I think both are serious contenders. The top two team runners listed below are Destiny Collins and Danielle Jones ... Collins beat Jones in two head-to-head races during the season, but Destiny Collins suffered an unfortunate injury and is still recovering ... at her best, she's very close to O'Keeffe (whom she beat once) and Ostander. This could be a really good race with lots of girls vying for a top five placing ... I'm expecting Ostrander and O'Keeffe to lead the race, but other girls below have shown quick starting tactics ... The last 1000 meters could be very interesting. |
