Once again NY is remarkably deep in talent ...
one Footlocker Finalist (and a number of girls who could be) ... A host of national-caliber teams ... Plus more runners with enough talent to challenge the top
runners ... 2011 will be another great cross country
season in NY.
The individual profiles are not separated by class
(I looked at all runners regardless of class) ... I wanted to limit the
individual profiles to 10-15 runners, but I went deeper to ensure
coverage of that range plus runners from each class.
Below the individual profiles are my
"Watch-Lists" for
Class A, B, C and D" ...
(they are mostly sorted by last year's overall speed ratings (so "new XC
runners" are not included) ... Last year's final
ratings include Federations, Footlocker and NXN.
Remember -
These are my
own Watch-Lists ...
I make them available so viewers can see who the top
individuals are and what they have done
... and I do not take the exact
order of the lists too seriously (and neither should anybody else)
... Once the season begins, these lists are not used in any way to rank
individual runners. |

in parentheses pertains to the 2011 XC season. The XC data listed
below the name are, in order, the race name,

most runners ... Girls XC performance
database and Girls track &field
performance database are available on separate web-pages. |

Nationals again in 2011...

Christie Rutledge had a huge improvement in XC 2010
(compared to 2009) ... she was the NY State Class AA champion and finished an
outstanding 2nd at NXN Nationals with a super performance ... Clearly one of the
top runners in NY State & the Nation. The
question is obviously her current physical-state since she did not compete in
either indoor or outdoor track ... This was addressed by FM Coach Bill Aris in a
Syracuse.com forum response as follows, "after being on the same path as
Courtney this past winter, which was to take a break from competition and just
run (while taking care of early college visits and school work), Christie
experienced a slipped sacro iliac problem (lower back) which required physical
therapy to fix. after fixing the problem (she’s fine now and running well) we
decided to not push it this spring, to not compete in favor of just running in
order to get ready for the summer and her senior year starting with xc. she is
looking forward to the summer and beyond" ... she is reported to be fine now and
training normally.

(9:43.20) and 1500m (4:35.08) and a fast 1600m relay split at Penn Relays

Based on her exceptional track seasons and improving
strength at the end of XC 2010, Samantha Nadel enters XC 2011 at the top of NY
State (along with the top FM girls) and is one of the best runners in the nation.
In indoor track, Samantha won the Millrose Games
Mile at Madison Sq Garden (in a fast 4:50.58) ... In outdoor track, she became
the 5th-fastest 3000 meter runner in NY history (9:26.74, behind Aisling Cuffe,
Nicole Blood, Molly Huddle and Christine Curtain) ... she split a very fast
1600m DMR leg at New Balance Nationals (4:42.75) and set a 1500m PR (4:25.59)
... also split a very quick 4x800 leg at State (2:12.71).

Brianna Nerud has proven she is one of the top elite
runners in NY State and the nation ... After overcoming some physical problems
at the beginning of XC 2010 and improving steadily throughout the season
(finishing 13th at NXN regionals), she demonstrated her real abilities during
track. Brianna finished 10th at Indoor
Nationals in the Mile (4:53.25) and was 2nd at Indoor States in the 1500m
(4:36.28) ... Ran a very good 3000m (9:59.8) in her only performance at that
distance ... But best of all, she set the NY State Steeplechase All-Class Record
at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France (6:29.56, which is the
2nd fastest US high school mark ever) ... In tandem with team-mate Samantha
Nadel (and a good supporting cast), North Shore looks to be one of the top teams
nationally (along with FM and Saratoga).

Mary Cain is the defending NY State Class C champion
in XC and finished 14th at Federations ... Last year was her first XC season; she was a
swimmer. Mary's improving track abilities
are truly amazing ... After having a very nice indoor season, she started the
outdoor season with a remarkable 4:41.8 DMR 1600m relay split (and nearly
ran-down a leading Aisling Cuffe in the process) ... followed that with very
fast open times in the 400m (0:55.5) and 800m (2:06.44) ... At NY States, she
shattered the NY 1500m record with an amazing 4:17.84 ... At New Balance Outdoor
Nationals, ran an amazing 4x800 relay split (2:03.74, with an opening 400m in
58.x) ... and just for good measure, she ran a very fast 3000m in her only
effort at that distance (9:28.6, which is the 6th-fastest 3000m in NY history)
... I'm looking forward to her 2011 XC season.

and ran extremely well ... She finished 2nd at States Class A (2nd to Aisling
Cuffe), 4th at NXN Regionals, and 20th at NXN Nationals.
Kelsey excels in track ... she is the Indoor States
1500m champion ... set a 1500m outdoor PR at States (4:23.82) and was 6th at New
Balance Outdoor Nationals in the Mile (4:47.39) ... another top elite runner in both
NY State and nationally.

Megan Young was hampered by injuries throughout XC
2010, so I like her 2009 XC performances as a better gauge of her XC abilities
... I last saw Meghan in person at Outdoor Track States 2010; when I saw her at
Outdoor States 2011, she looked about 8 or 9 inches taller (but I could be
wrong) ... Megan won the Emerging Elite 800m race at New Balance Outdoor
Nationals (in a very good 2:11.90) ... I'm expecting a really good 2011 XC

Not surprisingly, the FM girls dominate the Class A pre-season ratings (which are
basically last year's overall ratings) ... FM rivals the incredible Saratoga 2004
team for a reason ... FM 2010 and Saratoga 2004 are the best girls teams of all-time,
and FM 2011 may have something to say about that.
Saratoga 2011 has 5 girls in the pre-season Class A top 20 ... that's why they will
likely be ranked #2 in the nation entering 2011 ... Section 3 again has two runners
who can challenge the FM girls (Laura Leff and Maria LaMontagne).

Class B has some exceptionally good individual talent ... NOTE - Kelsey Margey is
transferring to Friends Academy (Class C), so she is no longer part of Class B.
Lauren Mullins havs the best rating from last year ... But I expect Samantha Nadel will
challenge for the top-spot in Class B and the entire State (she looked super during
outdoor track) ... And the sometimes "overshadowed" Brianna Nerud might well step-up
to the "elite national" level in cross country based upon her national and international
experience in track.

CLASS C
The Bronxville girls are the odds-on favorite to win the Class C title again for good
reason ... It would be no surprise if Mary Cain steps-up to the "elite national" level
in cross country, and in tandem with Meredith Rizzo, Bronxville has a top duo worthy
of a nationally ranked team.
Update NOTE ... Found out that Kelsey Margey is transferring to Friends Academy ....
That could set-up a great race between Kelsey Margey and Mary Cain.
Not sure which class Canton will run in at States (I'm leaving them Class C until they
run State Quals) ... Emily Waligurski is a super talent (Onteora drops to Class C this
season); her track performances suggest a much higher XC rating.
