November 30, 2005 ... Article in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle newspaper ... Hilton runner Amanda Griggs on crutches following foot injury at  Footlocker NE ...

Excerpt from article:

But since the opening bell Monday morning, senior Amanda Griggs has been the center of attention, and much concern. She showed up at school on crutches.

"Here's what we know right now," Szczepanik said of his co-captain and lead runner, who struggled to finish 72nd at the Foot Locker regionals Saturday in New York City.

"She's been advised to keep her weight off her left foot. She said it started bothering her early in the race Saturday. I could tell after the first mile and a half she had a look of discomfort.

"The pain is on the outside of her arch. We're told it's an aggravated ligament she strained rolling her foot, overcompensating for soreness in her leg.

"She was limping around Sunday but she's been getting treatment — ultrasound, electro stimulation and physical therapy — and she said it is feeling better.

"She's making the trip and she assures me she'll be ready to run. We'll have her foot wrapped very securely."

Griggs has a history of stress fractures, which have limited her potential in some of her most important races. But she's also pulled off fast efforts following successful treatment.

November 21, 2005 ... Brief Thoughts on Footlocker & NTN

Footlocker ... Due to time constraints at work, I do not have time to prepare a detailed preview & prediction of the Footlocker NE regional race at VanCortlandt Park on Nov. 26th ... Some good information about the contenders is presented by Steven Underwood on DyeStat.

I have spent some time evaluating the teams selected to NTN ... During that process, I have seen some excellent performances by individuals from around the nation ... For the Girls Footlocker - three girls nationwide have posted individual speed ratings above 160 - Aislinn Ryan (Warwick, NY), Marie Lawrence (Reno, NV) and Megan O'Reilly (Mt. Spokane, WA) ... several girls have a rating in the mid-to-upper 150s including Elizabeth Yetzer (Lakeville, MN), Annie St. Geme (Corona del Mar, CA), Nicole Blood (Fast Lane Saratoga, NY), Betsy Bies (Yankton, SD), Keara Sammons (Smoky Hills, CO), Caitlin Lane (Fast Lane Saratoga, NY), Bria Wetsch (Holy Family, MN)  ... In the Northeast Footlocker region, other girls with performances in the low-to-mid 150s include Hannah Davidson (Saratoga), Lindsey Ferguson (Saratoga), Amanda Griggs (Hilton) and Danielle Tauro (So Reg, NJ).

For the Boys Footlocker - the highest single race rating I've seen (205) belongs to Michael Eaton (Greenwood, KY) ... Mohamud Ige (Denver So, CO) and Steven Weeks (Arvada, CO) ran 202 and 201 at the Colorado State Meet ... Other runners to hit 200 or above include Kenny Klotz (Catholic Central, OR), Diego Mercado (West Covina, CA, 202-203 at Mt Sac Inv), Steve Murdock (Saratoga), Sandy Roberts (Broughton, NC, 200 at Great American) ... there may others because I've only been looking at races involving NTN teams ... In the Northeast Footlocker region, Brian Rhodes-Devey (Guilderland, NY, 199 at Federations), Craig Forys (Colts Neck, NJ, 199 at MOC) and Ben Massam (Chatham, NJ, 198 at NJ Groups) ... Many others in the 190s - Should be very competitive for the ten top places and a trip to San Diego.

NTN (Nike Team Nationals) ... I hope to have a complete preview and prediction of NTN similar to last year ... I decided to spent a little extra time evaluating the NTN-selected teams (their State meet races and other important races where possible) ... As of right now, both the boy's and girl's NTN races look very competitive (more so than last year).

Boys NE Region ... Several e-mails have asked me about CBA-New Jersey and their comparison to Fayetteville-Manlius and Saratoga ... At the New Jersey Meet of Champions (MOC), CBA-New Jersey  posted speed ratings of 192.7, 192.3, 184.0, 181.3 and 173.7 (average 184.8) - At the NY Federations Champions, FM posted ratings of 191.5, 190.6, 188.8, 179.4 and 175.8 (average 185.2), and Saratoga 194.9, 192.5, 178.8, 178.1 and 174.8 (average 183.8) ... Both FM and Saratoga were somewhat better (faster) at the NY State Class Meet ... CBA-New Jersey and FM have already received auto-bids to NTN ... Saratoga should receive one of the two remaining at-large bids, because Saratoga (on their best performance) is capable of winning NTN, and I can't believe the NTN Selection group will exclude any team that has a legit chance of winning ... And Morris Hills, NJ - although they didn't have their best race at MOC, they have run fast enough this season to beat a number of teams that have received automatic bids.

Girls NTN ... What a difference a year makes! ... Last year, Saratoga was much the best and Smoky Hills, CO was much the second-best entering the race (not very interesting from a prediction point-of-view) ... This year is different - at least four teams seem to have a legitimate chance of winning NTN (my evaluation is not complete and Corona del Mar, CA has not run their State meet as yet).

Corona del Mar, CA is the number one ranked team in the nation - This past weekend, Corona del Mar broke the Mt. Sac record (team average) with their best overall performance of the year - top runner Annie St. Geme posted her best rating of the season (156.0), and the next four ratings for the Corona girls were 134.7, 131.0, 129.0 and 120.3 ... Both Saratoga and Hilton are very competitive with these ratings - Saratoga at Federations (149.4, 147.7, 128.4, 122.9, 121.0) and Saratoga at States (154.1, 151.8, 129.1, 128.4, 124.3).

Saratoga and Hilton have the auto-bids to NTN ... Two at-large bids are remaining, and the Northeast has at least three deserving teams - Roxbury (NJ), Bronxville and Suffern ... Roxbury broke the Holmdel course record at New Jersey MOC (their ratings were 143.7, 140.0, 130.7, 117.7 and 114.0 which are better than last year's team that went to NTN and finished 9th) ... All three teams (Roxbury, Bronxville and Suffern) have clearly run faster than some teams receiving auto-bids (unfortunately, they are located in the Northeast region) ... I expect Roxbury will receive an at-large bid - not sure about Bronxville or Suffern (but both deserve it) - with a decent performance, all three would most likely beat at least one of the teams that has already received an at-large NTN bid.

November 6, 2005 ... Caitlin Lane & Nicole Blood ran in the Adirondack Association Junior Olympics at Saratoga State Park ... Caitlin Lane ran 17:01 (speed rating of 154.7), sister Brittney Lane was second (19:12, speed rating 111.0) ... Nicole Blood ran 17:05 (speed rating of 153.3)

October 16, 2005 ... Caitlin Lane & Nicole Blood ran in the Saratoga XC Classic at Saratoga Park ... Caitlin Lane ran 17:04 (speed rating of 153.7) -  ... Nicole Blood won  ran 17:26 (speed rating of 146.3)

October 11, 2005 ... Nicki Junod (senior, Cicero-North Syracuse) had an unfortunate occurrence at the Manhattan Invite in the Girls Eastern States Championship race ... About halfway through the course and running near the front pack, Nicki caught a tree root just right and broke a metatarsal in her right foot ... Somehow she managed to finish the race in a great deal of pain in 14th-place (15:19.8) ... X-Rays showed a clean break, but she's done for the rest of the XC season.

Nicki Junod is the top-ranked female runner in Section 3 ... At the Outdoor NY State Track & Field Championships in June, Nicki finished 4th in 1500 Meter race with a 4:33.35 PR ... she was 15th at XC Federations and 21st at Footlocker-NE last year ... her improved speed made Nicki a legitimate contender at this year's Footlocker qualifier.

October 2, 2005 ... Caitlin Lane competed in the Syracuse Festival of Races 5K (Oct 2) and finished 5th overall ... sister Brittany Lane finished 21st ... an accurate speed rating can not be calculated for this race.

Aislinn Ryan (Warwick Valley) won the High School Girls 5K (17:03 for a speed rating of 164).

Aug 17, 2005 ... The Saratoga Harness Track One Mile Race (Aug 15) ... Saratoga's Lindsey Ferguson and Steve Murdock won the Elite Divisions of the One Mile Race contested at the Saratoga Harness Track which usually features harness horse racing ... the half-mile track has a surface coating that is a composite of rock dust and soil (mostly compacted rock dust) ... Ferguson ran her opening half-mile in 2:25 and finished in 5:03.15 ... Selected Results:
 Women Age Time
 Lindsey Ferguson 17 5.03.15
 Hannah Davidson 15 5.10.13
 Kipling Hill 17 5.19.05
 Ashley Campbell 17 5.20.18
 Brianne Bellan 13 5.34.20
 Kaitlin O'Sullivan 16 5.35.14
 Cameron Vahanian 16 5.40.68

 Men
 Steve Murdock 17 4.18.56
 Matt Lopiccolo 29 4.22.78
 Greg Kelsey 17 4.26.74
 Paul Mwangi 38 4.26.94
 Scott Mindel 18 4.29.28
 David Raucci 19 4.34.54

Steve Murdock's excellent time (4:18.56), in combination with his 14:59 time in the Silks & Satins 5K, suggest that Brian Rhodes-Devey (Guilderland, winner of the Empire State Games 5000 Meters in 15:28) and Steve are currently the top two male high school runners in NY ... BUT they have not raced the FM guys or Ben White ... Section 2 figures to have some great individual races between Brian Rhodes-Devey, Steve Murdock, Dan McManamon (Shenendehowa) and Matt Shaffer (Bethlehem) - although I've been told there is a Section 2 runner who may be capable of challenging all four (doesn't want to be identified until he wins the first race) ... Personally, I don't believe it, but I didn't believe Coach Paccia when he told me "We got a Sudanese kid from the Kenyan refugee camps and he's gonna win States!" ... And I definitely do not believe some other Section 2 rumors (I need to see it a newspaper before I believe it).

The Great-Race (Team Triathlon) Auburn (Aug 14) ... The Great Race is a team competition that includes a 5K (or 10K) Race, Bicycling and Canoeing ... Jake McAndrew (Oswego) finished 2nd in the 5K race with a good time of 15:44 ... Chris Mason (Auburn) finished 9th in the 10K race (33:57) - earlier in the summer, Chris finished 5th in the Empire State Games 5000 Meters (15:54) and has been running very well.

TROMPTOWN HALF MARATHON (De Ruyter, NY ... Aug 11th) ... Very nice performance by the FM guys ... good effort by Hiliary Hooley...

Update ... Coach Aris has been kind enough to send this explanation concerning FM's participation  "...the 1/2 marathon was nothing more than a strong training run for ALL FM'ers. That was their instruction from me, and that's what they did. Each could have run faster if I let them, but that would have been pointless at this time. In Lydiard vernacular, it was between 1/2 effort and 3/4 effort for all; in Daniels terminology the run for each was between marathon pace and tempo pace effort. Nothing more than a verification (to ourselves) of the effect of our summer base work thus far. Boilermaker was early litmus test 1, and Tromptown was litmus test 2."
